Challenges: Break Through or Break You?

Character balancing

“Challenges are gifts that force us to search for a new center of gravity. Don’t fight them. Just find a new way to stand.” (Oprah Winfrey)

Successful gymnasts, dancers and tight rope walkers are very adept at maintaining their center of gravity. They learn early on how to keep the weight of their bodies evenly disbursedto maintain their balance and avoid serious injury.  When we carry a heavy backpack or several shopping bags, we naturally shift our center of gravity to offset the parts of our bodies that are out of balance so that we don’t fall over, right?

Let’s look at challenges for a moment.  What happens when we are faced with a challenge, obstacle, or problem? Does it knock us over? Do we shift our stance (i.e., perception, determination, motivation) so that we remain upright?  Are we adept at facing our adversities as steppingstones instead of stumbling blocks?

Adapting to life’s challenges by adopting new skills and mindsets are perfect strategies to realign our center of gravity amidst the storm.  We cannot change the direction of the wind, but we can adjust our sails to reach our destination without overturning and sinking!
